Evidence of a Chemical Reaction

This week we will investigate what a chemical reaction is and how we know that one has occurred through the evidence of chemical changes. Embed each of the videos (listed as links below) on your blog as one single post titled "Evidence of a Chemical Reaction."

Beneath each video link, write in complete sentences what you observed in that video. What evidence do you see that indicates that a chemical reaction has occurred? What are the chemical changes that can occur during a chemical reaction?

A pondering moment: What causes a reaction to end?

Finally, find a YouTube video on your own that shows a new chemical reaction and embed it into your blog.
Visit other classmates' blogs to watch their videos and comment on them the same way.

Prezi Project Expectations

Today in class you were assigned an element upon which you will develop a PREZI presentation at: http://www.prezi.com/.
When you finish you will demonstrate your element with the use of the Panaboard.
Science 8A will be assigned as follows:
Li-Luka J.
Be-Luka L.
Na-Jacob
Mg-Monica
B-Philipp
C-Sophia
Cl-Teodora
N-Caroline
O-Ergi
F-Marko
Al-Dijana
Si-Brin
P-Cassie
S-Emily

Your Prezi must include sections on:
  • Physical properties
  • Chemical Properties of your element,
  • Element Symbol, Bohr Diagram, Lewis Dot diagram
  • What type of element it is
  • Common Compounds (in which their element is a primary constituent),
  • Occurrence and Production,
  • Hazards
  • Safety (For example: exposure to air, water, combination with other compounds, touching, etc...)
  • USES:  (Health sector use, Military use, Industrial use, and/or New Research or Emerging Technologies using their element.
We will use these Prezi's later in our investigations of bonding properties between elements.
Due Friday, September 16, Day 2.

Building an Atom Simulation

http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/build-an-atom

Go to this simulator and click on Run Now and then OK.
Make sure the symbol, mass number and net charge sections are open by clicking on the + sign.
For each element you make, you will see the element lit up on the periodic table.
Here is what it should look like:

What happens when you add a proton?
What does it mean when an atom is stable?  What does it mean when an atom is unstable?
How do you make an atom stable?  What do you need to do?
What is the valence electron pattern as you move across the periodic table?
What happens to the atom when there is more protons, more neutrons, or more electrons?
What's the difference between a positive and a negative ion?
How do you make a neutral ion (charge of 0)?

When you have finished exploring this simulation, you will play the game.  You may need to review what it means to be a neutral atom or an ion (+ or -).

The Element Song with Tom Lehrer

Chemical Party Analysis

After watching this video again, embed the video into your own blog. List and describe the various interactions you see occurring at the party between elements. Who is attracted to whom? Who bonds with whom? Be very observant to the interactions, some are very quick and some are extremely obvious. Be sure that you include all of the molecular combinations you see and THEN research the chemical reaction online to figure out what compound they make and what it is used for.

Evidence of a Chemical Reaction

This week we will investigate what a chemical reaction is and how we know that one has occurred through the evidence of chemical changes. Embed each of the videos (listed as links below) on your blog as one single post titled "Evidence of a Chemical Reaction."

Beneath each video link, write what in complete sentences what you observed in that video. What evidence do you see in that video that indicates that a chemical reaction has occurred? What are the chemical changes that can occur during a chemical reaction? A pondering moment: What causes a reaction to end?
Finally, find a YouTube video on your own that shows a new chemical reaction and embed it into your blog.
Visit other classmates' blogs to watch their videos and comment on them the same way.

***BONUS: What can chemical changes tell us about the elements that are involved in the reaction?

WELCOME TO GRADE 8A!!!

Welcome back to all of you who I have taught last year and a BIG welcome to those who I have the honor of teaching this year.  I am expecting a great year ahead for all of us and I look forward to carrying out many scientific investigations with you too.  Good luck this year and remember...I am always just an email away or drop in to see me if you need ANYTHING throughout the year.

Cheers!

Genetics Unit Reflection

Now, it's time to REFLECT about the unit. Think about the questions below and use them in your blog post.
I would like you to make a web of all the things you have learned during the unit in www.bubbl.us and put it on your blog.  Then, I want you to write a reflection about the unit using the questions posed to you below.  I would like to see that you include at least one thing that you learned or that intrigued you from each of your classmate’s presentations as well as other topics we discussed or activities we had during this unit.     After studying genetics and heredity and listening to a variety of topics during your classmates presentations, how are you more informed about genetics?    Unit Question:  How are the changes in DNA giving us expected and unexpected results?   How is science influencing the way society looks?    Do you believe that it is a right of the science and technology industry to engineer and manipulate genes?  If not, is there ever a good time to do this?    How is Human Ingenuity a positive and/or negative thing in the area of genetics?

Where will I be in 2031?

Everybody has at least one goal in life. At least, they should. Everyone has a dream or many. In your next blog post, I would like you to write a letter as if you were writing in a journal on March 1, 2031.

Where would you be?
What would you be doing?
Would you have a family?
What career would you have at the age of 34?
What will you have accomplished by then?

We will use these letters later in a class discussion during this part of the unit. I can't wait to read your life stories...or dreams. :)

What's the Difference Between Mitosis and Meiosis?

Yesterday in science class, we read about mitosis (asexual reproduction) and meiosis (sexual reproduction). We also completed an activity where we used four pieces of yarn to represent chromosomes within a body cell and a sex cell.

Make a blog post in response to this question and include links to the videos you watched that helped you to understand this concept.

Cancer Warrior on NOVA

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/cancer/program.html
Go to this link and watch each segment. Take notes on important ideas you get from each section.
Be sure that you have read Section 3-4: Cancer in your textbook and take input/output notes.

When you finish these two tasks, read pages 68 and 69 in your textbook titled:  When Should New Medicines Be Made Available?  You will use the knowledge you gained from watching this video and the readings to complete a One World Report regarding medicine, science and society.  You may use the FDA website on drug testing if you want for more information.

In your own words:
  • Write a short introductory paragraph about the film: Cancer Warrior as well as your thoughts on the information you gained regarding cancer and the innovative treatments you saw.
  • Using the section in the textbook regarding medicines, describe the benefits of parmaceutical drugs for society, but also the benefits of thoroughly testing a drug before it is approved for widespread use.
  • Explain the problem of determining when people with serious illnesses should be allowed to have experimental drugs.
  • Examine the pros and cons of allowing experimental drugs to be released before the entire testing process is complete and be sure to provide examples.
  • List possible benefits of releasing a drug early.
  • Identify risks that patients take when they use medicines that have not been fully tested.
